Displaced People in Action (DPIA) involves asylum seekers and refugees
in their new communities, in a voluntary capacity, giving them meaningful
and interesting uses of the their time. It assesses their existing skills
and allows them to learn new ones, offering opportunities for training,
activities, educational visits, and special projects, working in partnership
with existing voluntary organisations. It achieves these goals by organising
activities and projects on an on-going basis.
The objects of DPIA are:
1/ The relief of people who are displaced by reason of hostilities,
persecution, oppression, discrimination, and natural disasters or other
like causes and their families and dependants who are in conditions
of need, hardship and distress.
2/ The advancement of their education.
3/ The provision of facilities for recreation and other leisure time
occupations in the interests of social welfare in order to improve their
conditions of life.
It is our intention to provide educational and positive activities for
young people, single adults, families, and children. We endeavour to make
the activities we provide a high quality, worthwhile experience for all
those involved. It is our experience that many displaced people undertake
English classes while in the UK, but have little opportunity for practicing
the skills they learn. Moreover, in any population, there will be people
who learn well by going to classes and studying, while others learn from
hands-on activities. DPIA's projects compliment existing educational services
by providing a forum in which both learning styles can prosper.
DPIA has received funding from The Diana, Princes of Wales Memorial Fund
and The Community Fund.
