Education for Adults

There are many opportunities for adults refugees in the UK to study. If you want to study English Language as a second language or learn a new skill or have your qualification recognized or fined yourself a job, you will probably need advice on the course of action to take and the options available to you. You will need to know whether you will be better off before taking such action and also you need to know: Is there a charge for the course that you want to take. Can I get money to live on while you are on the course? Does studying affect your benefits? What are the course requirements?

.: Where to get advice on Adult education.

There are organization such as the Welsh Refugee Council, Displaced People in Action and Minority Ethnic Women Network that gives advice on education paid or unpaid. Young people less than 19 years old, can get free careers advice in schools and through the careers services. Careers advice is also available to adults at some career services.

This service helps people to look at their choices in education, training and work. Your council will have an information desk where you can find the names and addresses of local colleges and training institutions. You may find such information in your local library, organization supporting asylum seekers and refugees and the Citizen Advice Bureau.

.: Assessing your level of education.

The British level of education system may be different from the system in your own country. Your may already has qualifications but you need to find out whether they will be recognized. This can be complicated and a specialist advice is needed.

The UK National Academic Recognition Information Centre gives information on how overseas qualifications relate to the UK’s qualifications. You can get a free letter of equivalence by applying to the career advice team at the Welsh Refugee Council.
